Netflix Now: The Killing

There’s not much to say about The Killing except that you should watch it.

I’m only on the third episode but I sobbed my eyes out when Rosie Larsen’s parents realize that she’s been murdered. Heart. Breaking. Any show that can make me cry is worth watching.

My favorite part about this show? The people look normal.

The main detective is a female (appreciated here at S&B) who doesn’t wear low cut crisp white button downs and high heels. Who could possibly wear heels while solving crimes? I’m quite positive that Nancy Drew did not and she’s my favorite female detective.

The show is also dark and filled with twists. It feels as if I’m watching a feature film instead of a television show. Harkens back to Along Came a Spider, a movie I thoroughly enjoyed and you probably don’t even remember.

Watch the show. I promise that you won’t regret it. The second season is currently airing on AMC but I prefer to Netflix past seasons to avoid commercial breaks. I’m just that hardcore.

Suggested to me by Netflix because I enjoyed The Walking Dead, Being Human and Damages. Have you seen Damages? Oh, don’t worry. I’ll review that show next week.

Average of more than 155K ratings: 4.3 Stars

My Ish with Motivational Books: Book Report on The Energy Bus

My workplace assigned us the task of reading a motivational book this semester: The Energy Bus. Now, the general consensus, with which I agree, is that this is a useful book. Uplifting, even. Still…

When I started reading, I told myself not to have any preconceptions. True, I don’t regularly appreciate “7 Steps to a Happier Life.” But c’mon, sometimes you just have to …ahem…jump on board the bus (wagon).

The book (The Energy Bus, remember?) starts with a forward, and I actually read forwards, which lists off all other books authored by Jon Gordon. Books like The Energy Addict and The 10 Minute Energy Solution. What I saw was an author admitting to me, before I even started his book, that this is not original. I can get the same message from several other books. Also written by him. He stretched one idea into three books.

This guy is publishing a watered down, elementary level parable about a bus driver named Joy (really?) and a guy named George (so vanilla) who work at the NRG company. (Say it slowly…Get it? Cute, huh? Vomit.)

This doesn’t prove anything, but it did bug me that the font is huge and there are wide margins and graphics—I thought I was reading the novelization of a Disney movie.

Bottom line: we all need someone to energize us. But I think we’d all rather it be a real relatable person instead of cutesy little metaphors and generalized rules that fit for every situation but speak to no one in particular.

All that being said, I do have an inspirational mantra. My brother actually gave it to me recently. He said, “Look at yourself every day and say, ‘I’m a badass.’” I do, too. It feels great, I highly recommend that one.

Things to Celebrate

The one year anniversary of Osama Bin Laden’s death. I don’t think we should go run around the streets celebrating, but it was a big accomplishment for the U.S. to “get rid”of one of the most wanted men alive.

We should all dress up in our finest to honor Donatella Versace’s birthday. Maybe wear a too-tight dress.

It’s National Truffles day. I don’t know if that means chocolate truffles or truffles you use for backing, but I’m hoping it’s the first one. I love truffles.

News to Know

Obama landed in Afghanistan yesterday to sign an agreement with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to cover the decade after the US troops withdraw in 2014. Obama said troops will train Afghan armies, we will not build permanent bases, and we will not patrol the mountains or streets. With the agreement, Afghanis will know that we are supporters, but we’re not necessarily going to be right there in the heat. (AP)

Facebook is now into the business of saving lives. You can sign up to be an organ donor on your page and hopefully help save some lives. There is a big shortage of donors so they’re hoping the 900 million Facebook users will make a big impact. (Mercury News)

Cubans are hoping for a cease in the travel embargo that started 50 years ago. Without the embargo, citizens will be able to travel out of the country easier. Well, there are still some rules like, not all doctors, scientists, military, etc. can leave at the same time because they’re afraid of a “brain drain.” (HuffPo)

Happy Hump Day!
