Dress up Your Plain White Tee

It may be cliché, but the absolute most versatile piece of clothing a woman can own is a white T-shirt. If you buy the proper fitted shirt and take good care of it (stay clear of mustard, red wine, shedding pets, and any activity that might result in perspiration), you can dress that shirt up and down to fit all occasions. Yes, even the office! Here are three basic examples for how to put together a professional outfit with this staple.

Outfit #1: The key piece here is the statement necklace. A big, bold necklace that might be hard to pair with a complicated blouse looks refreshing and chic against a simple white backdrop. Keep the rest of the outfit sleek and bright for a great summer look – perfect for a day when you’re sneaking out for a lunch date.

Outfit #2: A white blazer over a white base is definitely a power outfit – if black makes you look slim and petite, white makes you look bold and powerful! Pair with slim pants and classic, but bold, jewelry to complete this power look when you’ve got a big presentation.

Outfit #3: For a creative look, pair the white tee with a structured vest and coordinating pants. Add a few bright accessories for a slightly more casual, but still professional look. This would be a great outfit for making a statement – maybe pitching ideas to a new client?

Outfit #4: For an even more casual take on a basic tee, add some trouser jeans – normal blue jeans would be too casual for an office environment. To keep things classy, make sure your accessories are neutral and classic. Although I couldn’t resist throwing in this fun scarf!

Things to Celebrate

It’s World No Tobacco Day. No second-hand smoke today, woohoo! Too bad this will never really happen.

It’s National Macaroon Day! Time to stuff your face with these delicious treats.

Brooke Shields celebrates her birthday today. Seems like she’s not doing much acting lately, but I hope she’s having a great day.

News to Know

Mary-Kate is dating a Sarkozy, as in the former president of France’s brother, Olivier Sarkozy. The Olsens must not mind age gaps in relationships because Mary-Kate is 25 and Olivier is 42. They are apparently head-over-heels for each other, but let’s see how long that lasts. (Newser)

Mark Zuckerberg is no longer on the top 40 billionaires list thanks to Facebook going public. He has lost around $1.5 billion since May 18th. (Washington Post)

Today marks the ninth day of deliberation for the John Edwards trial. Its seems as if the jurors are being a little fishy, but officials think a decision will be made soon. Maybe they all just need to wear the same color outfit and we’ll know. (CS Monitor)

We have been doing a few posts about “girl crushes.” These women truly inspire us to be better people, chase our dreams, stand up for what we believe in and so on, but I wanted to introduce a “fitness crush.” This man is not some extreme body builder and he doesn’t work out 40 hours a week for six pack abs. He does work harder than anyone I know and every morning when my alarm goes off and I am about to hit snooze to sleep through the gym, he inspires to me to get my butt out of bed!

This “fitness crush” is my father, Mike Barnett. Here are four reasons why he is truly a fitness inspiration to me:

1. He proves health and fitness have no age limit:
Three years ago he decided he needed to make changes to be healthier. He picked up a bicycle, and as much of a struggle as it was to make it up one hill at the very beginning, he continued to challenge himself and never gave up. Now at 56, he has conquered the little bunny hills and challenges himself to mountains!

2. He shows anyone can make health and fitness a priority:
He owns a business, spends time with family and friends and has other hobbies. He doesn’t have a trainer or a nutritionist but still makes time to work out! Everyone is busy and can find a great excuse to not exercise or be healthy, but you have to make it a priority and he has done just that.

3. He spreads the joy of being healthy!:
One of the best things to do to be healthy is to spread it and share it! It is a gift that makes everyone feel good physically and emotionally, who wouldn’t want that? This past year my dad and his two best friends trained and completed a 100-mile bike race together! This was a healthy activity they could enjoy and do together and they accomplished a goal much more motivating then just a pant size.

4. He is doing it for the right reasons and the right way:
He isn’t working out to be “skinny” or fit into a smaller pair of jeans, and he defiantly isn’t starving himself or skipping my mom’s delicious pasta. Everything he has done, he has done slow and in moderation. He has earned every pound he has lost and therefore respects it.

This makes it seem like it was easy for him to pick up that bicycle one day, be motivated and lose weight. I can attest that is certainly wasn’t easy and still isn’t, but he is still active and healthy at age 56, with no excuses.

The ultimate reason he inspires me is because he didn’t just sit back and accept that he needed to make changes, he got up against all odds and made them!
